  1. We’ve had an marked increase this past year in children and youth attending our Sunday school as described above. We’re lucky that most of them also stay for worship, but there is still the desire to see the entire family involved.

Let’s clarify that there are some very important reasons for this:
    1) we want to see everyone come to Christ. Of course we minister with those we can. But when we are able to identify others whom we know by name, they become people we especially ache over.
    2) we recognize that a parent is the best discipler of a child, not the church.
    3) related to the last point is the reality that parents who are unconnected to the church often allow their children to participate in those things that the church does only to the degree that it is convenient for the parent, and without any consideration of the spiritual needs of the child.

What we have done, is to try to pay attention to what are the needs of the entire family, not just the children. Many of the children and youth who have become connected with us come from families that have a host of other issues going on in there lives, not all of them spiritual. And it is possible for the church to come alongside these families to help them address some of these other needs. Thus we are able to minister to the whole family — children, youth, and adult members alike; and body, soul, and spirit as well.

As relationships have developed and we know the families better, we have dared to ask them to help us with certain things. These parents are generally good parents who look out for the welfare of their children. There are times when they can help us with the ministries of the church, especially those involving their own children. In not just our coming alongside them, but asking them to come alongside us in what we are doing, they become connected to our values and spiritual goals as well.

And while we have always communicated by sending the church newsletter, we just recently added a new tool, a “YOUth News” letter that goes directly to the children and youth themselves that is focused on children and youth specific events in the life of the church. A good next step may be the addition of a parent’s page.

  2. great thoughts Gene… it is true that we have to focus on helping the home become the place where spiritual lives are shaped. I also think it’s a good idea to have those families, as you have built a relationship, to come along side the church to help in ministry. It does build friendships and community. Thanks for your comment.

  3. Great work for our Lord. Sounds wonderful to me because, it is written; “Unless you come to the Father as these little ones”. Need I say more, God blesses you Brother!!! Chap. Craig
